Safety and Security

Port Esbjerg is committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and resilient port. To minimize the risk of safety and security incidents, safety measures and security requirements are strictly enforced throughout the port. The Port Security Officer (PSO) holds overall responsibility for port security in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and implemented in the European Union through Regulation (EC) No 725/2004. Failure to comply with applicable safety or security requirements may result in immediate revocation of access and, where appropriate, legal action.

Access Control and Access Cards

Access cards can be collected at the Security Access Facilitation Entrance (S.A.F.E.), located in the annex at Hulvejen 1, 6700 Esbjerg.

Cards are issued Monday-Thursday 08:00-09:00 and 13:00-14:00, except on holidays or unless otherwise posted.

Port Esbjerg is subject to Maritime Security (ISPS) legislation and regular random checks of access cards are carried out. Valid photo ID must be presented to receive an access card (e.g. a passport or Danish photo ID), together with valid documentation of employment or work authorization.

Access to Port Esbjerg’s restricted areas is controlled through personal access cards issued to authorized individuals based on their role and required access. Access cards are personal and must not be shared, transferred or used by anyone other than the assigned cardholder. Cardholders are responsible for safeguarding their access card and must report any loss, theft, misuse or suspected compromise immediately. Access rights may be restricted, suspended or revoked where requirements are not met, employment or assignment ends, or where security considerations require it. Unauthorized use of an access card or attempts to gain access to restricted areas may result in immediate revocation of access and, where appropriate, further action.

STOWLOG

Port Esbjerg uses the STOWLOG application to support the management of visitors, access restrictions and safety requirements across the port. You can find mobile applications on Android through the Google Play Store or on iOS through the Apple App Store, depending on which device you use. You can open the web version directly in any standard internet browser without installing files.

We recommend downloading the application, associating yourself with Esbjerg Havn and enabling notifications to receive emergency and critical operational information, such as gate closures, from our control room.

If you wish to visit Port Esbjerg, please pre-register your visit through the application. You can then use the generated QR code to check in with your host, who will receive a notification when you arrive.

Information processed through STOWLOG is handled in accordance with applicable Danish and European data-protection legislation and Port Esbjerg’s privacy policy.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

Port Esbjerg uses ANPR as part of its security and access-control measures. Individuals granted access may opt-in for ANPR to facilitate access to ANPR-enabled gates. ANPR data is processed in accordance with applicable Danish and European data-protection legislation and Port Esbjerg's privacy policy.

To ensure reliable ANPR recognition, vehicles must come to a complete stop before the designated stop zone.

Surveillance

Port Esbjerg employs a range of camera systems, including PTZ, aerial drones and fixed cameras, to support security controls, enforce safety measures, respond to emergencies and facilitate port operations. Data collected through surveillance systems is processed in accordance with applicable Danish and European data-protection legislation and Port Esbjerg’s privacy policy.

Drone Flying

Drone flying is not allowed unless permission has been granted by the harbour authority on telephone: +45 7612 4000 or email: vagt@portesbjerg.dk

All unauthorised drone activity within the port is immediately reported to and coordinated with the Danish Police. Port Esbjerg may take measures to neutralize unauthorized or non-cooperative drones where permitted by applicable Danish law and under the conditions established by the competent authorities.

Cybersecurity

Significant IT or cybersecurity incidents that may affect port security or operations must be reported to Port Esbjerg immediately at portsecurity@portesbjerg.dk. This includes incidents that may affect the implementation of security measures, the safe arrival or departure of vessels, or the handling and movement of cargo within the port. Where required by applicable legislation, cybersecurity incidents must also be reported to the relevant authorities through Virk.dk, including in accordance with Port Esbjerg’s obligations under the NIS2 legislation.

Early reporting enables Port Esbjerg to assess the situation, coordinate with relevant authorities and partners, and take appropriate measures to protect the security, safety and continuity of port operations.

Security levels in Port Esbjerg

Security levels are part of the ISPS Code. For the port, these security levels are set by the national government. For sea-going vessels, the level is established by the flag state or the port state. In the event of an increased threat, the security level is raised and vessels and terminals must take additional security measures.
